Fordham Preparatory School Helps Children from Ecuador, One of the Poorest Countries in the World, Through Service Project.

A group of teenage students from my high school, Fordham Prep in New York, wants to help children from one of the poorest parts of our world, Ecuador.

My name is Douglas Bajan, and I am a 16-year-old high school student from Fordham Prep. I need your help for this just cause.

I think that, regardless of the recession that is occurring in our home country, we are very fortunate to be living in the best country in the world, the United States of America.

This summer we want to travel, work, and volunteer in the most underdeveloped school district in Ecuador.

We hope to exchange ideas about our democratic way of life, our American experiences, history, culture and tradition. Moreover, we want to create friendly relations with people from a completely different part of the world. The United States of America has always been the symbol for the highest standards of freedom, democracy and justice for all. We want to travel as young Ambassadors of our country.

That is why we need your small tax deductible donation. Whatever you can give in this difficult time will be greatly appreciated.

See the program information below:

Students and faculty member alike will travel to Duran, Ecuador to live with the poor, visit schools, and take part in community programs. This program is designed to help young Americans understand how fortunate we are to live in America, and how the inhabitants of some of the poorer countries of the world need our help. Our high school, Fordham Prep, has sponsored various programs that have resulted in the betterment of the lives of those who were once homeless and poverty-stricken.

I, along with eleven other students, will travel to Duran, a large urban barrio outside the city of Guayaquil, Ecuador. We will work as part of the Rostro de Cristo (Face of Christ) Program. The Missionary Society of St. James the Apostle founded the program in 1987; it was established to offer high school and college students the opportunity to work with the people of Duran. The needs of the poor in Duran are tremendous. We will work with a variety of ministries throughout the week – day care centers, schools, hospitals, etc.

I want to take part in this Ecuador service trip mainly to experience something so radically different from what I am normally accustomed to. Granted, I have been to some of the poorer parts of certain cities in America, such as Robbins, Tennessee. There, I worked for Habitat for Humanity, helping in the construction of two houses for some of my less fortunate countrymen. Visiting Ecuador, however, will really open up my eyes to the conditions of life that people similar to me must endure in less fortunate parts of the world.

I’m also sure that helping the children of such a region educationally and emotionally will be a rewarding experience, and I don’t think there will be many chances for me in life to do that. I’m not even sure if there will be many more chances for me in life to visit Ecuador, so this trip does mean a lot to me. In preparing for what is sure to be a life changing experience, I am asking for the support of people of good will.
First, I ask that you pray for the young group and me as we prepare for our time in Ecuador. I also ask that you consider a donation towards this project. As a group we are hoping to raise at least $100,000 to donate to Rostro de Cristo. Over the past six years groups from Fordham Prep have donated over $50,000 to the Rostro de Cristo program.

This has been used to help fund their programs in Duran and to build a second volunteer house in a neighboring town on Arbolitos. That house now allows another group of volunteers to provide many services to the people of the Arbolitos. This year we hope to be able to help the program and the people of Duran in a similar way.

If you have any questions about this project please contact me, (914-374-8313) or you can contact Mr. Brian Carney, the faculty organizer of the project at Fordham Prep (718-367-7500).

Sincerely yours,
Douglas Bajan
